Selma - Film Criticism by Crash Course



Watch the above video:

Make notes of the main points. (You may need to watch it more than once.)
Then answer the following questions:
1. Is the film 'Selma'  completely historically accurate?
     a). Identify two scenes in the film are not strictly historically accurate and explain why.
     b). What are director, Ava DuVernay's reasons for presenting the material in this way?
     c). Do you consider this dramatic licence was justified? Explain the reasons for your answer.

2. What are the main themes of the film? 
     a). Explain how these are established in the opening scenes.

3. Name the bridge that the marchers tried to cross.
     a). In the film, how many times did the marchers try and cross the bridge.
     b). Give details of what happened at each attempt.

4. Explain the importance of television and newspaper journalism to events at Selma.
