Watch the video and answer the following questions:

Q1. What is the most basic edit  and what does it do?

Q2. What is the purposes of a simple cut?

Q3. What is cutting on action?

Q4. Give three examples of action cuts.

Q5. What is a cut away?

Q6. What is the purpose of a cut away shot?

Q7. What is cross cutting? Give an example

Q8. What effects can cross cutting be used to achieve.

Q9. What is a jump cut? Explain its purpose.

Q10. Explain what a match cut is and give an example.

Q11. What is a transition?

Q12 What is meant by fade in fade out?

Q13.How is a fade in fade out different to a dissolve? Are they used for different purposes? Make a table.

Make notes of the main points. (You may need to watch it more than once.)

Then answer the following questions:

1. Is the film 'Selma'  completely historically accurate?

     a). Identify two scenes in the film are not strictly historically accurate and explain why.

     b). What are director, Ava DuVernay's reasons for presenting the material in this way?

     c). Do you consider this dramatic licence was justified? Explain the reasons for your answer.

2. What are the main themes of the film? 

     a). Explain how these are established in the opening scenes.

3. Name the bridge that the marchers tried to cross.

     a). In the film, how many times did the marchers try and cross the bridge.

     b). Give details of what happened at each attempt.

4. Explain the importance of television and newspaper journalism to events at Selma.

Working in small groups of 3 you will need to produce:

One short script (1 - 2pages) in standard layout.

One hand drawn Storyboard

One blocking diagram indication movements of actors and positions of objects.

Two videos: each video will be a different version of the same script.
                    One video should be shot as one shot (carefully planned and blocked).
                    The other video should be shot in a variety of carefully planned shots.
                    Use: establishing shot, master shot, mid shots, close-ups, big close-ups, reverse shots,                           profile shots, over-the-shoulder shots, etc.
